The Banta was the deputy of an oeléebalang in an Atjehnese landschap, typically the eldest of the brothers or relatives of the chief, who acted as regent during the oeléebalang’s absence. The position of the banta in an Atjehnese landschap is, says Snouck Hurgronje (Deel I, p. 96), to be compared with that of the patih in a Javanese regentschap. When Teukoe Tjhi Mohamad Thajeb was a member of the Volksraad in 1918–1919, the oeléebalangschap of Peureula was held by his banta.
