1665 marks the founding year of the Dutch Marine Corps, the elite infantry and marine force of the Dutch Republic. Although the corps would not see action in the Dutch–French War until later, its establishment laid the institutional groundwork for later deployments to the East Indies, including the defense of Dutch trading posts in Aceh.
Connection to Aceh
The Dutch Marine Corps later provided garrison troops for VOC forts along the Aceh coast, protecting the spice trade that was central to the Republic’s economy.
