The year 1649 witnessed the signing of a major treaty between Tajul-alam, the “Sultane of Aceh,” and the Dutch East India Company (VOC), negotiated by envoy Johan Truytman. This agreement — the Dutch–Aceh Treaty of 1649 — granted the Company extensive trade advantages on the entire West Coast of Sumatra, including the exclusion of all other European and native traders (except Acehnese) and fixed pepper prices.

Aceh Context

Following the VOC’s conquest of Malakka in 1641, relations with Aceh had soured. Truytman’s mission restored goodwill and built upon the earlier treaty of 1641. The 1649 treaty was a significant diplomatic success for the VOC and paved the way for the subsequent agreement on tin trade in Perak (1650). It marked the peak of VOC-Aceh cooperation in the 17th century.
