The VI Moekims Peukan Bada was the federation of six moekims around Peukan Bada in Groot-Atjeh, cited by D. W. N. de Boer for a distinctive local term in the law of security over land.
The local term for mortgage
De Boer recorded that the Inlandsche hypotheek (indigenous mortgage) was encountered in judicial practice both in Sigli and in Groot-Atjeh, though scarcely any longer under the old proper Atjehnese names — beunda in Sigli, boengkaj in Groot-Atjeh — being designated instead by the malajo-hollandisme (Malay-Dutch hybrid word) borok (from Dutch borg, surety), with the verb memperborok; or, in Groot-Atjeh and specifically in the VI moekims Peukan Bada, by the Malayised Atjehnese form memperboengkajkan.
Significance
The survival of memperboengkajkan in this one district illustrates the uneven displacement of Atjehnese legal vocabulary by Malay and Malayo-Dutch hybrids in the early twentieth century — a process De Boer treated as evidence of the recency of the institutions concerned.
In the eye survey of Groot-Atjeh (1937)
The VI Moekims Peukan-Bada stand first in the list of coastal and valley districts of Groot-Atjeh covered by Dr. C. E. Gomperts’s eye survey of 1937, printed with the sketch-map of the afdeeling. The surveyed districts were divided by Gomperts into kuststreken and valleistreken — a distinction central to his findings, xerophthalmie proving markedly less frequent in the coastal districts, especially in the 0–5 age group.
