Soensang River is a tributary of the Musi River near Palembang that was the main waterway navigated by Dutch forces during the 1821 expedition. The fleet, including the frigates Dageraad and Van der Werff, encountered strong enemy batteries and obstructed channels, which hampered their advance toward the city’s Kraton (page 94).
Military Significance
Control of the Soensang was essential for projecting Dutch power inland and for the pacification of the Aceh‑influenced southern Sumatra region.
