Ndjong is a landschap in the onderafdeeling Sigli of the afdeeling Pidië, coming from Meureudoe. It is for the most part mountain- and hill-land, with a plain only in the coastal strip. The lagoon along which the road leads — not the tram-line, which bends westward — stretches over a great length and offers a pleasant view over the open sea. Only further west lies the good land of Ndjong with its many sawahs. The landschapshoofd is renowned for his wealth, which shows that his revenues are significant, thanks to the treasure of the soil which is the fertility here. Without irrigation-works one could not manage here, necessary as they are, if only to limit the bandjirs. For the benefit of rice-cultivation the population, led by its chiefs, lays out simple works; others arose through the labour of the B.O.W. Behind the landschap rises Atjeh’s Goudberg in a light mist — the Seulawaih Agam, that is, the man, and the smaller Seulawaih Inong, that is, the woman; for in everything of Nature the Atjehnese sees or imagines the presence and the distinction of the horse.
