The monument to Teukoe Oemar’s death was the great memorial standing beside the coastal road of the West Coast of Atjeh marking the place where the Acehnese leader Teukoe Oemar fell, recorded by Dr. J. Tijssen in Een strijd in Atjeh (1934) as one of the features of the landscape he traversed in 1933.
The description
Tijssen described the district he travelled after 23 August 1933 as “een weinig bevolkte kuststrook van 500 K.M. lengte, maar nauwelijks 5 K.M. breed. Er loopt een per auto berijdbare weg door de as; aan weerskanten de massagraven herinnerend aan de vele Atjehoorlogen en den opstand van ‘26. Een groot monument wijst de plaats van Teukoe Oemar’s sneuvelen.” — a thinly peopled coastal strip 500 kilometres long, but scarcely 5 kilometres broad. A road passable by motor car runs through its axis; on both sides the mass graves recalling the many Atjeh wars and the rising of ‘26. A great monument marks the place of Teukoe Oemar’s fall.
He concluded the description with the sentence that gives the passage its force: “Alles spreekt van strijd, verzet, haat. Alles behalve het volk.”
Significance
The monument, together with the massagraven flanking the road, is the pamphlet’s record of the physical memory landscape of the Atjeh-oorlog as it stood on the West Coast in the 1930s — a monument to the death of the Acehnese leader erected by the victors, in a district where, Tijssen noted, no officer went into a kampong without a soldier behind him with a loaded carbine, and where he himself nevertheless lived unarmed among the people for weeks without anyone harming a hair of his head. Asked why it was there, just there, that things had always been so turbulent, he answered: “Ik weet het niet en ik heb het niet begrepen.” — I do not know it and I have not understood it.
