Merbau was a coast-state on the east coast of Atjeh whose radja, Toekoe Moeda Angkasa, was driven from his country by the hostile states of Simpang Olim and Tandjong Semantoh in 1876 and wished, with Dutch help, to recover what he had lost. After the treacherous murder of Toekoe Moeda Angkasa on 11 December 1876, his son was appointed radja of Merbau and Tandjong Semantho; by the chiefs a new radja of Simpang Olim was chosen, who on 5 February 5 February 1877 swore the conditions imposed by the government.

The Dutch Alliance

The Dutch government, in 1876, wished to act vigorously against the hostile states of Simpang Olim and Tandjong Semantoh, and saw a favourable opportunity in the case of Toekoe Moeda Angkasa, who had been driven from his country, Merbau, by these two. The government held that he should be strongly supported, and the disagreement between the commander Wiggers van Kerchem — who refused to detach troops — and the government over the support of Toekoe Moeda Angkasa led to Wiggers van Kerchem’s resignation. His successor, Diemont, at once took up the expedition against Simpang Olim with vigour.

The Murder of Toekoe Moeda Angkasa, 11 December 1876

The son of Toekoe Moeda Angkasa was appointed radja of Merbau and Tandjong Semantho after the treacherous murder of his father on 11 December 1876 by a handlangers of the radja of Simpang Olim. The appointment was made before the Dutch troops returned; the new radja of Simpang Olim was chosen by the chiefs, and on 5 February 5 February 1877 solemnly swore the conditions imposed by the government, whereupon the Dutch flag was given to him.
