Kwala Loë (also written Kuala Loë) was the mouth of the Loë river on the east coast of Groot-Atjeh to the east of the Atjeh river, chosen as the landing-place of the second Aceh expedition on 9 December 9 December 1873 — partly because less resistance was expected there, partly to spare the kampong Marassa whose head, Toekoe Nek, had offered his services to the Dutch. Kwala Loë was also one of the two simultaneous landing-places of the operation of 25 January 25 January 1877 for the closure of the coast from Kwala Gighen to Kroëng Raja, under the personal direction of the commander-in-chief.
The Landing of 9 December 1873
The landing of the second Aceh expedition took place at Kwala Loë on 9 December 9 December 1873. “Although the troops were received at the beach by some musketry, this did no damage and the enemy soon fled. Also most of the fortifications proved to be abandoned or offered only slight resistance.” On 13 December 13 December Kota Moesapi was occupied; on 14 December 14 December the long line of enemy fortifications south of Kota Moesapi was taken by the storming of Tiban by General Verspyck; on 15 December 15 December the mouth of the Atjeh river was reached.
The Operation of 25 January 1877
In January 1877 the troops resumed operations for the completion of General Pel’s program: the occupation of the coast from Kwala Gighen to Kroëng Raja. On 25 January 25 January [1877] the operations began under the commander-in-chief’s personal direction with a simultaneous landing at Kwala Loë and Kroëng Raja. The latter place was not deemed suitable for a settlement; the troops returned along the beach to Ladoeng and thence over the mountains to Lambaroe Angan to join the other column, which had landed at Kwala Loë under Colonel Van der Heyden. After the junction, the strong Lamnga was occupied, abandoned by the enemy.
