Hoengtjala was a kampong (village) with bentengs in the middle of the marshland of the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh, described by G. B. Hooijer as a storehouse and safe refuge of the sabil bands, and evacuated by the Moslemin on 12 November 1893 before the advance of Toekoe Djohan.
The evacuation and its sequel
On 12 November 1893 Toekoe Djohan continued his movements supported by Dutch artillery fire, with the result that the bentengs at Hoengtjala were evacuated by the enemy. Before that kampong, Hooijer recorded, Nja Bantah had twice been repulsed, and Toekoe Neq had so often seen his plans thwarted from it, that the two chiefs — tegen de bevelen van den Gouverneur in, against the Governor’s orders — could not restrain themselves from giving their fighters a free hand and delivering that storehouse and refuge over to plunder and fire.
