The Evacuation of the bentengs at Hoengtjala on 12 November 1893 followed the resumption of Toekoe Djohan’s advance in the XXVI Moekims of Groot-Atjeh under cover of Dutch artillery, and was succeeded by the plundering and burning of the kampong (village) by the fighters of Toekoe Nja Banta and Toekoe Neq against the Governor’s orders.
The advance
Hooijer recorded that on 12 November 1893 Toekoe Djohan continued his movements, supported by Dutch gunfire, met dat gevolg, dat de bentengs te Hoengtjala, in het midden van het moerasland, door den vijand werden ontruimd.
The sack
Before that kampong Nja Bantah had twice been repulsed, and Toekoe Neq had so often seen his plans thwarted from it, that the two chiefs — tegen de bevelen van den Gouverneur in — could not restrain themselves from giving their fighters a free hand and delivering die voorraadschuur en veilige wijkplaats der sabilbenden over to plunder and fire.
