Böbasan is a Gajo kampong not far from Takengon, described by Broersma as the type-example of the Gajo kampong in contrast to the Atjehnese. The Atjehnese kampong has dwellings with planted yards; the Gajo kampong has no yards with any growth but great houses. That recalls the Batak-kampong; an agreement with that is also that many related families live together and each has a section. The Gajo dwelling is built on posts above the ground and has a particular interior, described in Snouck Hurgronje’s Het Gajo-land en zijn bewoners. Wood and bilik (wattle) are the building materials, and now it is remarkable that not every day a Gajo-kampong burns down, for stoking is done regularly. The space under the house lies full of firewood and against the cold one stokes daily. Wood, bilik, atap — everything is black with smoke — and for each family-section in the house there is still a round stove-place on the floor.
