Jhr. Witewaall van Stoetwege was a Dutch captain of infantry — a member of the Dutch titled nobility (jonkheer) — in Atjeh in 1876. On 27 February 1876 he was wounded in the daily fighting of the patrols of Major B. E. Mekern’s column at Kajoe-Lē, in the struggle to keep open the road between the new posts of the south-east line, and died of the wound.
H. F. Meijer lists the three officer casualties of that road in February 1876: Captain Van der Pauwert killed on 15 February, Second Lieutenant L. H. Kooy wounded on 18 February, and Captain Jhr. Witewaall van Stoetwege wounded on 27 February at the consequences of which he died. The same toll — endemic musketry from the kampong edges on every daily patrol — sealed the isolation of the Kajoe-Lē column that was raised only by the storming of Lambaroe on 7 March.
