Van der Pauwert was a Dutch captain of infantry in Atjeh in 1876, serving in the column of Major B. E. Mekern at Kajoe-Lē when, on 15 February 1876, he was killed in the daily fighting of the patrols that tried to keep open the road between the new posts of the south-east line.

After the Atoeh catastrophe, Mekern’s column had taken its stand at Kajoe-Lē and begun the fortification site, sending daily patrols towards Atoë and Mesigit Pagar Ajer. Those patrols were fired upon continually from the kampong edges in which the enemy hid. Meijer lists the toll on that road by date:
- 15 February — Captain of Infantry Van der Pauwert fell;
- 18 February — Second Lieutenant of Infantry L. H. Kooy was wounded;
- 27 February — Captain of Infantry Jhr. Witewaall van Stoetwege received a wound of which he died.
The continuing enemy pressure severed the road altogether, provoking the siege of the column at Kajoe-Lē in the first week of March and the relief operation of 7 March. The record of Van der Pauwert’s fall is from H. F. Meijer, Atjeh van 26 December 1875 tot 4 September 1876 (1883).
