W. J. C. Leers was a Dutch officer of the Genie (Engineers) who held the rank of Majoor der Genie in Atjeh in 1874 and, as the senior engineer officer at Kota Radja in the autumn of 1874, received the newly-arrived Tweede Luitenant C. J. Snijders on 8 November 8 November 1874 and assigned him to the Compagnie Mineurs en Sappers garrisoned there.

The Kota Alam Operation, 13 November 1874

Together with Majoor T. J. A. van Zijll de Jong (artillery), Leers sited the Benting Kota Alam fortification on 13 November 13 November 1874 — the operation described in detail on the dedicated event page. The two officers chose a site near a bend of the Atjeh River that commanded both the fortified edge of Pinang to the northeast and Longbatta to the south, while dominating a long stretch of the river — one of the best crossing points. The site selection was the engineer’s contribution to a rapid field-engineering action whose sapper section was commanded by Snijders himself.
