Vice-Admiral F. de Casembroot was a senior Dutch naval officer who, in a private letter dated 1938, praised the conduct of the marine landing division during the Acehnese expeditions of the late 1860s. The letter, addressed to Lieutenant P. S.anjaajrd (likely a misspelling of a marine lieutenant), highlighted the “honourable mention” awarded to marines such as Lieutenant D. A. van Vuuren.
Connection to Aceh
Although the letter was written decades after the events, it reflects the lasting recognition of the marine forces’ role in the conquest of Bandjar and other Acehnese strongholds. The correspondence was later deposited in the marine corps archive in Rotterdam but was lost in the 1940 fire.
Significance
Casembroot’s acknowledgment underscores the importance of naval‑marine cooperation in the Dutch colonial project in Aceh.
