Van Lijnden van Sandenburg was a member of the States General who took part in the secret sessions of April 1874 on the origin of the Atjeh war. Cited by Verstege in 1886, he declared on 16 April 1874 that the policy which had led to the Atjeh war “reeds lang was voorbereid, in voornemens en gedachten, maar niet in voorzorgsmaatregelen en middelen en daarin lag ook de onvergeeflijke fout” (“had been long in preparation, in intentions and thoughts, but not in precautionary measures and means — and therein lay the unforgivable mistake”); pointing further to the documents, which fully confirmed the very deplorable state of the navy and showed that, as regarded the knowledge of Atjeh, the government had been in complete darkness, he asked whether it was too strong to say that the failure of the first expedition was wholly to be laid to the government’s charge.
