Van der Postde kleine, bleeke Van der Post — was a Dutch brigadecommandant of the Korps Maréchaussée at Blang Kedjeren in the years 19091910, whose act of leadership — het logies binnenvliegen, de geladen karabijn in de hand — is Zentgraff’s principal example of the restoration of discipline in a verworden brigade.

The mutinous brigade, 1909-1910

In 19091910, after the Infanterie was replaced by a divisie maréchaussée’s on the Blang, the Duivel came to the bivak: a series of murders, suicides, and near-mutinies, fuelled by the absence of women, the long patrols, and the verwording (corruption) of military spirit. Selbach sneuvelde, en pleegde hierna zelfmoord”, and so on. In some brigades nam men bijna geen notitie meer van den baas (one almost no longer took notice of the baas); the goede militaire geest was gone.

The “Aantreden!” episode

— The small, pale Van der Post, baas of the brigade in which the new threat showed itself, who suddenly attacked the Beast. It was thus. He was to go on patrol with the brigade at 7 p.m., and everything was ready, when the pang (Native sergeant) told him of that man who would not go to the wacht and had evil intentions. The man was inside, with loaded karabijn and a full patroontasch beside him on the balé-balé, and had said to his comrades: „Als ik op wacht moet, dan allemaal er aan!” — If I have to go on wacht, then all of you get it! — What was really the most miserable thing about this affair: the whole brigade did not lift a hand, and seemed to have not the slightest interest in the case. So little was left of a brigade of eighteen brave men, the small but so powerfully welded unit.

— Until Van der Post flew into the logis, the loaded karabijn in his hand. He aimed it at the unwilling one, commanded two others to take his weapon from him. They did this, hesitatingly, hardly hiding their reluctance. There was mutiny in the air. There was so little discipline left in the brigade that some muttered and growled when the baas acted so forcefully, but he threw down his carbine in an outburst of rage, sprang with open arms before the mutterers and defied them: „Shoot, then, if you have the guts.”

— There was a moment of silence, in which the mental dressage of a powerful discipline hesitated before the abyss of revolt, and at that moment Van der Post commanded, short and sharp: „Aantreden!” — Fall in! The Beast gave way; the men slid almost automatically into the rank, gripped again by the tradition of the métier, in the spell of the baas’s short command.

They were eighteen lumps of human beings from whom in a quarter-hour the old brigade was re-forged; Van der Post made them run until they could no more, like a rider who has mastered an unwilling colt and chastises it with the riding-crop until the last trace of resistance is out of it.

Death by Acehnese housekeeper

— Thus the brigade won back its most precious possession: discipline and mutual trust. This the insignificant pale Van der Post did, and was it not a damned shame that he later, on an evening when he came out of the canteen, was stabbed to death by his Acehnese housekeeper?

Significance

Van der Post is Zentgraff’s type of the nietige, bleeke brigadecommandant — small and pale, oogenschijnlijk zoo onaanzienlijk (apparently so insignificant) — whose moral authority, expressed in korte, scherpe commando’s, restored the goede militaire geest to a brigade on the edge of mutiny. Discipline is iets heiligs. Zij is geen juk, zij staat veel hooger dan dwang — Discipline is something sacred. It is no yoke, it stands much higher than compulsion. Van der Post’s death — doodgestoken door z’n Atjehsche huishoudster — is one of Zentgraff’s small ironies of the lot: the man who broke the Beast in his brigade killed by a private hand.
