Toekoe Tjibik — spelled in the sources also Toekoe Tjihik — was an Acehnese chief of the Samalanga region who, in the years after the Batoe Iliq expedition of 1880, broke with the religious party and burned the houses of the priests at Batoe Iliq. Coblijn, quoting the historian of the war in Hoe Atjeh te onderwerpen, records that under the protection of Toekoe Tjibik the Resident Scherer visited Batoe Iliq some years later, on 30 June, accompanied by a controleur, by the agent Persijn of the Atjeh supplies, and by a health officer; the once famous fortified kampong then stood abandoned, and the party could observe how the adjoining hills dominated it at 150 metres — the ground from which kapitein Von Lübtow’s outflanking company had turned the position in 1880. The change of sides of Toekoe Tjibik, marked by the burning of the priests’ houses, was characteristic of the fracturing of the war party in the coastal states after the failure of the defence of Batoe Iliq.
