Lieutenant Thielen was a Dutch naval officer who, on 24 December, led a party of 25 men on a reconnaissance mission to the plantation “Peereboom” during the Dutch riverine expedition in the interior of Acheh. His party reported the destruction of the sugar mill and kitchen by fire, and the testimony of two sick enslaved women who said rebels had set the fire three days earlier.

Thielen’s reconnaissance contributed to the Dutch understanding of rebel tactics and the extent of plantation devastation.
