Teungkoe Moet was the influential religious teacher of the Boven Wòjla who opposed vaccination and was killed resisting arrest in April 1918.
He had instructed both the district head and his two sons in Qoran recitation — “that instruction creates in Atjeh a lasting bond of particular significance between teacher and pupil.” On the ground of “an otherwise contestable interpretation of Muhammadan law” he became a fierce opponent of vaccination, started an action against it, and refused to appear when summoned to Koeala Bhèë. A marechaussée patrol was sent to bring him in; “on his arrest Teungkoe Moet offered resistance with some followers and… was killed”, one marechaussée being severely and three lightly wounded. His death led to the klewang attack of 25 April 1918 and to the coconut and sugar-cane excursion; the two sons of the loyal district head Dato Sarong had been much attached to him.
