Teungkoe Lam Peuneu-eun is a legendary Acehnese Islamic saint whose tomb is located in the IX Mukims of Great Aceh. According to Acehnese folklore, he is revered as the spiritual founder of pepper cultivation (seunebok lada) in Aceh.
Legendary Origin of Pepper
Legend holds that Teungkoe Lam Peuneu-eun sowed the seeds of a kapok tree (panjou), from which the first pepper vine (Piper nigrum) miraculously sprang. In his honor, Acehnese pepper planters historically held an annual feast (kanduri or chandoeri) in pepper gardens across Aceh prior to the harvest season.
