T. P. J. Berg was a Dutch 2e luitenant (second lieutenant) of the Indies army who distinguished himself in the action of 22 July 1880 during the expedition against Batoe Iliq in Samalanga: he took with the storming troops a fortification of the enemy whose rear stood open, so that the defenders fled in time; the enemy left there three dead, while on the side of the attackers one soldier was wounded. The citation is preserved in the account of the operations that Coblijn quoted and discussed in Hoe Atjeh te onderwerpen, where the conduct of the subaltern officers — Berg, Den Berger, and the reconnoitring 1e luitenant-adjudant Populier — is set against the failure of the direction of the attack.
