Sir Julian Pauncefote was the British permanent under-secretary who, from the Dutch side, was well known as the principal leader (voorname leider) of the negotiations of 1884 in the Tenom question. At the end of 1885 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, as Verstege noted together with the honouring of the Penang Chinese Koh Thian Poh and the elevation of the English negotiator Mr. Maxwell to the English peerage — tokens by which he judged England’s conduct in the whole affair (see Nisero affair (1883–1885)).
