Koh Thian Poh was a Penang Chinese who rendered services to the English side in the Tenom question. At the end of 1885, as Verstege noted in passing, a golden watch was presented to him with great ceremony, on behalf of the Queen of England, for the services he had proved in the Tenom affair; at the same time Sir Julian Pauncefote, the British staatssecretaris known to the Dutch side as the principal leader of the Tenom negotiations, received the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George — decorations which Verstege cited as part of the wary judgement of England’s conduct in the whole affair (see Nisero affair (1883–1885)).
