Sergeant Rood was a non‑commissioned officer of the Korps Mariniers who was killed by enemy fire during the first heavy engagement at the Mesigit on 10 April 1873. His death is recorded in the marine after‑action reports of C. J. Visser and highlighted the intensity of Acehnese resistance.
Rood’s fatal wound was described as the “first enemy shot” that caused a brief panic among the landing troops. His sacrifice was later commemorated in Dutch military memorials of the Aceh War.
