Mosselman’s own instruction ran: “If the man could no longer follow, then sergeant Ribin was to build him a platform in a tree as a kind of look-out post. In it he could then leave the sick man with two of the convict labourers and the tent-sheets with my baggage, and follow me again as fast as possible with the bearer of the carrying-litter and the dressing-tins.” He gave that order emphatically in the hearing of the whole brigade, to free it of all responsibility — and hoped, rightly as it turned out, that with that prospect the “sick” man would be able to walk after all.
