Raden Ario Soeraning Prang was a majoor (major) of the harisans (native auxiliary troops) from Soemenap, who served in the Dutch colonial forces during the Aceh War in the mid‑1870s. He is recorded as wielding a hereditary poisoned lance while leading his men during the assault on Adjoen on 30 December 1875 (see page 135). His role was pivotal in breaking the resistance of the Atjehers at the kampong edge, after which the Dutch column entered the settlement.
Military Role
Raden Ario commanded a contingent of barisans (native soldiers) and was noted for his personal weapon, a poisoned lance—an erfstuk (family heirloom) of his lineage. During the attack on Adjoen, his troops were the first to breach the kampong’s outer defenses, allowing the VIIIe bataljon (8th Battalion) to occupy the village (see page 135).
Significance
His participation illustrates the Dutch strategy of employing local elite leaders to command native auxiliaries, a common practice in the later phases of the Aceh War. The use of traditional weapons alongside modern firearms underscores the hybrid nature of the conflict.
