Panglima Besar Soeloong was the chief of a band of sea‑rovers who had established a fortified camp at Retch on the east coast of Sumatra. He declared his willingness to submit to the Dutch government, but was ultimately killed during the 1858 assault.
Conflict with the Dutch
Soeloong’s forces controlled the riverine approaches to Retch and resisted the landing force led by A. J. Kroef. The Dutch overcame a heavy rattan barrier at the main entrance, after which Soeloong and about 70 of his followers were slain, with 40 taken prisoner.
