Lieutenant Ahn served as a junior officer of the Dutch Marine Corps during the 1875‑1876 campaign in Atjeh. He was wounded by a beenschot (leg shot) during the assault on Adjoen on 30 December 1875 and was evacuated to an ambulance (see page 135).
Action at Adjoen
While covering the artillery section, Lieutenant Ahn received orders to protect the gun crews. His injury forced the Mariniers to reorganise under Lieutenant Mirandolle, who assumed command of Ahn’s section (see page 135).
Aftermath
Ahn was later transferred to a hospital in Padang, where he boarded the steamship Kroesen for repatriation. The vessel later sank, and Ahn was reported to have been “in a lazy chair” on the deck when it went down (see page 136).
Significance
His experience reflects the hazards faced by Dutch marine officers operating in the difficult terrain and climate of Aceh, as well as the logistical challenges of medical evacuation.
