J.H. Huijer was a tall and heroic Captain of the 4th company of the 9e Bataljon Infanterie who distinguished himself during the Second Conquest of the Great Missigit on 14 April 1873.
Action at the Missigit
When his unit was ordered to attack, Huijer rushed the Stormladders. Taking two rungs at a time, he reached the top of the wall amidst a barrage of Acehnese lances and swords. Huijer grabbed a rifle from a soldier, and while an indigenous soldier continuously loaded cartridges for him, he unleashed a rapid fire against the defenders. During this action, a lance pierced his right wrist. Later, in a profound display of camaraderie, Huijer and Lieutenant J.G. Blanken leaped into the mosque enclosure under heavy fire to retrieve the body of a fallen Amboinese fuselier. Huijer survived the war and retired in Amsterdam.
