Stormladders were crucial pieces of military equipment utilized by the Dutch forces to breach the high stone walls of Atjeh’s Groote Missigit.
Tactical Use
Carried by conscripted laborers (forced laborers) under heavy fire, these heavy wooden ladders were placed against the mosque walls during the First Conquest of the Great Missigit and Second Conquest of the Great Missigit. They were the site of the war’s most brutal hand-to-hand combat, as soldiers like Captain J.P. van Lier, Captain J.H. Huijer, and Gunner C.H. Kool van Heerens used them to assault the Acehnese defenders who fiercely guarded the top of the walls with lances and klewangs.
