J. E. J. den Berger was a Dutch 1e luitenant (first lieutenant) of the Indies army who, in the action of 22 July 1880 during the expedition against Batoe Iliq, took with his section the benting (fortified enclosure) lying south-east of the kampong Batoe Iliq and dominating it, which the 1e luitenant-adjudant A. G. Populier had discovered while reconnoitring the terrain. The work, which appeared to be held by a score of Atjehers, was carried; the enemy left some dead, several guns and lances, and about 1100 cartridges, while the Dutch had two wounded. Coblijn, who quoted the account in Hoe Atjeh te onderwerpen, set the capture beside the success of kapitein Von Lübtow as proof that the fortified kampong could have been turned and mastered had the column been used as a whole.
