Hamka (Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah) was a prominent Indonesian Islamic scholar, writer, and former teacher of Abdul Karim Amrullah (Hadji Rasul). In his biography of his father, Ajahku (published by Widjaya, Jakarta 1950), Hamka described the traditional practice of singing Arabic kasidas, such as the Burda, during religious festivals in Minangkabau villages.
Cultural Observations
Hamka noted that during the celebration of the Prophet’s birth (Mawlid) and the Midrādj (Prophet’s ascension), children dressed as hadji would lead processions while chanting kasidas, illustrating the integration of Arabic poetic forms into local devotional life.
