H. D. Guiot was a retired schout‑bij‑nacht (rear‑admiral) who became the chief parliamentary advocate for the preservation of the Korps Mariniers during the parliamentary debates of the early 1890s. He argued that the marine contingent stationed on the Dutch mainland was essential for overseas operations, especially in Atjeh.
Guiot’s lobbying helped prevent the complete dissolution of the corps, although subsequent reforms reduced its size.
