General Clauzel was a nineteenth-century French marshal and governor of Algeria whose colonial military methods were cited by Dutch commentators in comparative analyses of the Aceh War.

In Atjeh gedurende de tweede expeditie en later (1876), the author examined General Clauzel’s campaigns in Algeria—notably his attempts to pacify Oran and Constantine—to illustrate the universal tactical and logistical difficulties faced by European armies invading Islamic societies. Clauzel’s experiences were used to justify General J. van Swieten’s deliberate pacing during the Second Aceh Expedition.
