D. C. W. Sutherland — referred to in the source as Captain Sutherland — was a Dutch marine captain who commanded the marine companies that landed on the banks of the Pedir River during the Atjeh Expedition in January 1874 and who subsequently commanded Dutch marine forces during the 1874–1875 operations in Aceh. He was decorated with the Ridder Militaire Willemsorde (Knight, fourth class) for distinguished conduct in the Atjeh expeditions of 1873 and 1874, and was listed among those knighted in the royal decree of 6 October 1874.
Role in the 1874 campaign
Sutherland’s marine companies were among the first Dutch marine units to engage in the inland operations of the 1874 campaign. After landing on the banks of the Pedir River, his troops were forced to fight a defensive battle when the tide went out, suffering three dead and nine wounded. His marines subsequently participated in the siege of the Kraton (Aceh) under General major Verspijk and were involved in the capture of the sultan’s seat on 23 January 1874.
Later in the campaign, Sutherland’s marines joined the infantry brigades from Padang and took part in the construction of a bivouac at Penajoeng. His forces were thus integrated into the broader Dutch infantry-and-marine assault force that pushed inland from the Atjehnese coast in the early months of 1874.
Honours
The royal decree of 6 October 1874 listed Captain Sutherland among those knighted in the Militaire Willemsorde (fourth class) for bravery in Atjeh. The award, made on the standard operational rubric of the Atjeh expeditions of 1873 and 1874, reflects the high level of personal bravery recognised by the Dutch crown during the early phase of the Aceh War and reinforces the prestige of the Ridder Militaire Willemsorde as the highest Dutch military decoration for conduct in the field.
