Captain De Gelder was a Dutch marine officer who, together with Lieutenant Verhey, Lieutenant Mirandolle, Lieutenant Cambier and Lieutenant De Petit, led a detachment of roughly seventy marines during the Aceh campaign of 1875–1876. He inspected the troops before their departure from Aceh on 5 February 1876.
Role in the Expedition
De Gelder’s detachment participated in actions at Pakan Badak, the mountain passes of Glitaroem and Beradin, and the construction of a benteng at Bockit Daroe.
