Medische Nood (Medical Need) was the periodical of the Vereeniging SIMAVI in which Dr. J. Tijssen published in 1934 the statement on the missions and the kampong work that was reprinted on the closing page of Een strijd in Atjeh (1934).
The statement of 1934
The passage, attributed to “Dr. J. Tijssen in Medische Nood 1934 Nr. 1,” reads:
“Ik ken de zendingsziekenhuizen. Ik wenschte, dat er in Ned. Indië in plaats van 33 zendingsartsen 330 waren! Zijn er 20 zendingshospitalen, ik wenschte, dat „Simavi” het geld bij elkaar kreeg om het tot 200 te brengen! Maar ook dan zouden er menschen noodig zijn, die naast het mooie werk in de hospitalen het vuile werk in de kampong willen doen.”
Rendered: I know the mission hospitals. I could wish that in the Netherlands Indies there were, instead of thirty-three mission physicians, three hundred and thirty! Are there twenty mission hospitals — I could wish that Simavi got the money together to bring it to two hundred! But even then people would be needed who, alongside the fine work in the hospitals, are willing to do the dirty work in the kampong.
Significance
The statement is the most compressed form of the doctrine set out at Kampong medicine in Atjeh, and it supplies the only figures given in either source for Protestant medical provision in the Netherlands Indies in 1934: thirty-three mission physicians and twenty mission hospitals for the whole archipelago. It was printed immediately above the notice that SIMAVI had in that year expended f 26,500 on medical assistance to the indigenous population, of which f 4,400 was for medicines and dressings alone.
