The Herstellingsoord voor Rijks-Ambtenaren — the convalescent home for state civil servants — was the projected institution of the Vereeniging tot Ondersteuning van Burgerlijke Ambtenaren en Beambten in ‘s Rijks dienst (Association for the Support of Civil Officials and Employees in State Service) for whose founding capital P. H. R. Beuming published Schetsen uit den strijd op Groot-Atjeh in December 1911.
The appeal
The title-page of the book states that it was uitgegeven ten bate van het te stichten Herstellingsoord voor Rijks-Ambtenaren — published for the benefit of the convalescent home for state civil servants that was to be founded — and the price was set as low as possible, at f 0.10 a copy, for that reason. Beuming stated that the net proceeds would be handed to the board of the philanthropic association als bijdrage tot het stichtingskapitaal voor het Herstellingsoord.
In his preface he described himself as gedreven door een onweerstaanbaar verlangen om naar bescheiden krachten mede te werken aan de verwezenlijking van een ideaal — driven by an irresistible desire to co-operate according to his modest powers in the realisation of an ideal — namely the founding of the home, and set beside it his second object, that of making more general the public interest in and sympathy for the Netherlands Indies Army.
He connected the two purposes explicitly: Waar geregeld velen uit het leger in burgerlijken Staatsdienst treden, hoop ik, dat ook onze militairen met mijn streven kunnen sympathiseeren — since many regularly pass from the army into civil state service, he hoped that soldiers too could sympathise with his effort, and that the sketches would find a good reception both inside and outside the barracks.
Significance for the Aceh literature
The Herstellingsoord is the occasion of the book and therefore of the preservation of Beuming’s Atjeh material. His narratives of the sharpshooter of Biloel, the three-day battle in the Beradin pass, the surprise of Anak Galoeng, the patrol to the Goeah Teroes and his portrait of Pastoor Verbraak were all written and printed as a charitable fund-raising exercise for a Dutch civil-service benevolent society.
