The Atjehsche Landbouw Vereeniging — the Atjèh Agricultural Society — was the Atjèhse agricultural society, projected (in the 1923 brochure of the Atjeh-Instituut) to play a “grootsche rol” (great role) in the development of the rijstbouw as the principal future export crop of Atjèh. The Society was to be the principal Atjèhse institutional vehicle for the post-war agricultural development of Atjèh — the body that would concern itself with the improvement of the rice cultivation, the introduction of better rice varieties, and the construction and operation of the rice mills (pellerijen).
The Projected Role
The Atjeh-Instituut brochure of 1923, having set out the diagnosis of the declining pepercultuur and the prescription of the rijstbouw as the new great-trade article of Atjèh, turned to the institutional requirements of the prescription. The foregoing consideration, the brochure writes, will certainly be endorsed by those who have occupied themselves in Atjèh itself with this question; in particular the Atjehsche Landbouw Vereeniging is reckoned on, which “op dit gebied een zoo grootsche rol zal kunnen vervullen” (in this field will be able to play so great a role). To what extent the help of the administration can or cannot be missed, lies not for the judgement of the Atjeh-Instituut.
Significance
The Atjehsche Landbouw Vereeniging is, in the projection of the Atjeh-Instituut brochure of 1923, the principal Atjèhse institutional vehicle for the post-war agricultural development of Atjèh. The Society’s projected role — “een zoo grootsche rol” in the development of the rijstbouw — places it at the centre of the Atjeh-Instituut’s prescription for the post-war economic development of Atjèh.
