Description

Military-origin railway from Oelèë-Lheuë through Koeta Radja, Sigli, Lho’Seumawé, Langsa to Besitang, with branch lines to Pangkalan Soesoe and Lammeulo. Nicknamed by locals ‘het Atjeh-Trammemeje’. A vital link in the pacification of Atjeh. Annual transport roughly 100,000 tons of goods and 2 million passengers per year. Lost traffic to buses and trucks but made a profit in 1937 after severe budget cuts.

Significance

Atjeh-Staatsspoor (A.S.S.) / Atjeh-tram is recorded by Jongejan as part of the institutional landscape of Aceh.
