The Algemeen Handelsblad was the Amsterdam newspaper in whose feuilleton the Reisindrukken van Atjeh of W. Moens originally appeared, and at the request of some of whose readers the series was reprinted in booklet form (Amsterdam: Jacob van Campen, 1914). The Redactie (editorial board) of the Handelsblad introduced the series with a note presenting the author as the retired naval officer W. Moens, who on a business journey had visited Atjeh once more, having seen the country twenty years before in a state of war: De merkwaardige tegenstelling en de verbetering in den toestand van het land troffen hem zoo, dat hij besloot bekend te maken wat hij zag — the remarkable contrast and the improvement in the condition of the country struck him so that he resolved to make known what he saw. As the Redactie remarked, the impressions were of importance, not in the first place because they gave an idea of the contemporary state of an important part of the island of Sumatra, but above all because a historical fact, of the greatest significance for the Netherlands and its colonies, was made clear also to the non-expert reader: Er is vrede op Atjeh, de Atjeh-oorlog is voorbij (There is peace in Atjeh, the Atjeh war is over).
