A century after Sultan Ali Moegajat Sjah, in 1607, Groot-Atjeh got a man of great format: Sultan Iskandar Moeda, who took power at age 17. During his reign he took possession of half the coastal area of Sumatra and an equal portion of the Malacca peninsula. He is reputed to have organized/introduced the ‘nanggroe’ (family system) in Atjeh - the very ancient family system. Demanded great organization and regnal talent. The period 1550-1650 is the glanstijdperk (golden age).
