Retreat from the Missigit occurred on the late afternoon of 10 April 1873, concluding the First Conquest of the Great Missigit.
The Withdrawal
After hours of intense fighting inside and around the walls of Atjeh’s Groote Missigit, it became evident that the Dutch position was untenable against the relentless Acehnese counter-attacks. Around 5:30 PM, General J.H.R. Köhler received a report from Lieutenant C.J. Marinkelle detailing the precarious situation. Köhler subsequently ordered the withdrawal. The retreat was executed in good order by the 9e Bataljon Infanterie and the Marine-landingsdivisie. The troops marched out of the western opening of the mosque and relocated to a bivouac near Village Merdoehati. The Acehnese immediately reoccupied the mosque with victorious chants.
