Public debate against the Wujudiyyah was the open disputation held in Acheh shortly after the accession of Sultan Iskandar II (post-1636), in which Nuruddin ar-Raniri refuted the adherents of extreme Wujudiyyah mysticism.
Voorhoeve places it immediately after Raniri’s arrival in 1637. The sultan’s presence gave Raniri royal sanction, reversing the favour previously enjoyed by the pupils of Syamsuddin of Pasai under Sultan Iskandar Muda.
The debate is the historical context for both the Tibjan fi ma’rifat al-adyan and the Hudjdjat as-siddik li-daf az-zindik.
