Operation Simpang Olim (1878) was a punitive Dutch expedition against the kampong (village) of Simpang Olim in the interior of Atjeh. The operation is recorded in the award roll (page 185) as an “Operatien tegen Simpang Olim,” for which participants received an Eervolle Vermelding (honourable mention). The source notes that the action was part of a broader disciplinary effort against “kampongs Kroemoel en Watnelet” on the Aroe Islands, but the specific Simpang Olim operation took place in 1878.
Conduct of the Operation
The Dutch forces, drawn from the Korps Mariniers (Netherlands), moved inland to suppress resistance and enforce colonial authority. The operation’s success was recognised by the royal decree granting the honourable mention, reflecting the importance the Dutch placed on pacifying remote Acehnese settlements.
Significance
Simpang Olim exemplifies the smaller‑scale, yet frequent, punitive raids that characterised the later phases of the Aceh War, illustrating the Dutch strategy of “divide and conquer” through targeted village destructions.
