Jacobs’s Het familie- en kampongleven op Groot-Atjeh (“Family and Kampong Life in Greater Atjeh”) is a two-volume ethnographic study by J. Jacobs, published in Leiden in 1894, providing one of the most detailed late-nineteenth-century accounts of Acehnese domestic and social organisation in Groot-Atjeh (Greater Atjeh), the heartland of the sultanate.
Content
Jacobs’ work complemented the larger-scale ethnographic and political studies by C. Snouck Hurgronje (De Atjehers, 1893-94) by focusing on the micro-level of household and village (kampong) structure. It documented family life, marriage customs, housing, and community organisation in the coastal plain of Greater Atjeh during the late colonial period, when the Atjeh War was still being waged.
