Volksschool (English: “People’s (village primary) school”) is a term or concept described in Jongejan’s Land en Volk van Atjeh Vroeger en Nu in relation to Aceh. Most elementary form of schooling for the masses: reading and writing in Latin and Arabic characters, simple arithmetic.

Description
Most elementary form of schooling for the masses: reading and writing in Latin and Arabic characters, simple arithmetic. By the time of writing: 328 volksscholen, ~600 teachers, ~36,000 pupils. School fee 2.5–50 cents/month, mostly 5–10 cents. Three or four learning years. 201 of the 328 schools use Atjehsch alongside Maleisch. Alphabet percentage in 1930 census: 1.1% (vs 5.5% on Java).
Significance
The term Volksschool is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
