Memorie van Overgave was the memorandum of transfer drawn up by a departing Netherlands Indies administrator for his successor.
The Memorie van Overgave of H. N. A. Swart’s first civil successor contained the sentence that du Croo set out to refute: “everything in Atjeh that walks about on two legs hates the European.” Du Croo’s fifth summary proposition held that this was “in its generality a gross exaggeration and untrue — everything depends on the person.”
